The Importance of Standardizing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) in Spanish: The Case of Chilean Population

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a widely used and reliable screening test, has been adapted to various languages, including Spanish. However, standardization is essential for ensuring accurate results across different populations. A recent study aimed to normalize and standardize the MoCA-S (Spanish version) for the Chilean population.

The MoCA is a brief, simple, and valid assessment tool that evaluates general cognitive status. The study, which included 399 subjects over 60 years old, aimed to validate the MoCA-S in elderly individuals with MCI and MD. The results showed that the test was significantly different between groups, with a score of 25 or higher being optimized for sensitivity and specificity. Additionally, the MoCA-S correlated positively with education level.

The standardization of the MoCA-S is crucial for countries like Chile, where population ageing poses significant challenges for preventing and detecting neurodegenerative disorders. By adapting the test to the local population, healthcare providers can ensure accurate diagnosis and timely interventions for individuals at risk.
