The Future of Libraries: A Crossroads of Freedom and Censorship

As I reflect on my experience as a writer, particularly with my book Gender Queer, I am reminded of the crucial role that libraries play in our society. Unfortunately, the future of these institutions is uncertain, with many facing challenges to their very existence.

In recent years, there has been an alarming increase in book challenges and censorship, targeting books with diverse characters and LGBTQ themes. The American Library Association (ALA) has tracked this trend, noting a significant surge in the number of challenged books. My own book, Gender Queer, has become one of the most banned books in the United States.

The ALA has also documented instances where librarians have faced backlash for defending the right to read. In Jamestown, Michigan, librarians refused to remove GENDER QUEER and other books from their shelves, leading citizens to vote down funding for the library. Similarly, a teacher in Norman, Oklahoma lost her job after giving students access to digital library books.

These challenges are not limited to specific libraries or regions. Across the US, there is an uneven pattern of censorship, mirroring legislative attacks on LGBTQ individuals. Many libraries have implemented restrictions on who can obtain a library card, with some requiring parental permission for anyone under 18. Apps like Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive, used to access digital books, are now banned in Mississippi for users under 18.

The Brooklyn Public Library has taken a bold step by offering free eCards to young readers aged 13-21, aimed at making banned books more accessible. This initiative is a testament to the importance of libraries as hubs of knowledge and freedom of expression.

As an author, I am deeply grateful for the support of librarians who have worked tirelessly to keep my book on their shelves. At events and signing sessions, many librarians have shared similar stories with me, expressing their commitment to defending intellectual freedom.

The future of libraries is uncertain, with funding cuts threatening their very existence. The ALA estimates that some libraries will close by mid-2024 if they do not receive adequate support. It is crucial that we recognize the vital role that libraries play in our society and work together to ensure their continued success.

As I conclude my time as a comic artist for The Nib, I am reminded of the power of storytelling and the importance of preserving freedom of expression. Let us come together to protect our libraries and the right to read, ensuring that future generations can continue to explore and learn without censorship.
